 The excitement of opera has always been conveyed through the unique and thrilling performances of extraordinary individual singers.
Virginia Opera’s dedication to training the young operatic artist is – and always has been – a primary mission of the company, providing early performing experience to artists as diverse as:

- Renée Fleming (3 roles)
- Rockwell Blake (our first Almaviva)
- Florence Quivar (Dorabella)
- Frederic Burchinal (five roles)
- Amy Johnson (transitioned to soprano in our Spectrum Artist Program)

- Lawrence Brownlee (our last Almaviva)
- Sujung Kim (5 roles)
- Cristina Nassif (from Spectrum Artist to leading lady in just two seasons as our last Violetta, Carmen and Nedda)
We search for and choose our young artists annually on the basis of their extraordinary talent and potential. Through a “spectrum” of performance opportunities in our mainstage and outreach programs, as well as personalized work with top professionals throughout the season, our artists’ true operatic potential is realized, secured and strengthened.

Performing Opportunities
Participants in the Spectrum Resident Artists Program perform small roles and/or cover leading roles in the company’s mainstage productions, which are tentatively scheduled to be Aida, Die Fledermaus, Of Mice and Men and Magic Flute for the 2011-2012 season. Additionally, some young artists perform leading roles in several fully-staged Education and Community Outreach productions that tour schools throughout the state of Virginia. Community concerts and company promotional concerts offer artists the opportunity to perform standard arias and ensembles in concerts with piano. Spectrum artists are regularly re-engaged for main stage productions in future seasons.
Study Opportunities
Each participant receives regular coachings with members of Virginia Opera’s Artistic Staff, which include Artistic Director Peter Mark, Associate Artistic Director and Associate Conductor Joseph Walsh, and Principal Coach Laura Friesen. Master classes are held throughout the season covering topics such as stagecraft and foreign languages. The in-house Artistic Staff offers classes in resume preparation and auditioning techniques to our young artists during the course of the season.
Our program provides exceptionally talented young artists with a seasonal residency program that offers an extensive schedule of performing opportunities in the context of a professional training program. Artists receive weekly compensation, plus housing and transportation to Virginia.
Virginia Opera is committed to finding and training the outstanding artists of tomorrow. Those selected to participate in the program will be challenged and supported by an outstanding staff.
Apply to the Program
Interested applicants must submit ALL materials requested with the application in order to be considered for the Spectrum Resident Artist Program audition. Candidates should be certain to include an e-mail address and current telephone number. Please do not submit audio recordings or materials not requestd. Auditions for the 2011-2012 season will be held in New York with preliminary rounds on December 6, 7 and 8, 2010; and the final round on December 9, 2010.

APPRENTICE COACHES
Education and Community Outreach Performance Opportunities
Apprentice coaches serve as musical directors and pianists for Education and Community Outreach productions. They also serve as principal coaches for the resident young artists, preparing them for their mainstage roles, cover roles, and concerts. Coaches learn the basics of artistic administration and company management by serving as on-site tour managers, as well as, providing coaching for the young artists’ personal repertoire. Apprentice coaches are adjunct members of the mainstage musical staff. They are scheduled to serve as rehearsal pianists in several mainstage productions and serve as pianists for cover rehearsals.

Coaches will receive training and support from administrative staff to aid in tour management. The in-house artistic staff offers classes in resume preparation and auditioning techniques during the course of the season. Master Classes are held with visiting stage directors and other distinguished guests throughout the season.
Candidate Qualifications
Apprentice coaches should have attained at least a Bachelor of Music degree in piano and have exceptional experience in vocal accompanying. Individuals should be capable of managing artists and overseeing non-artistic aspects of the Spectrum Resident Artists Program.
The Audition
For the audition, please prepare a Mozart finale and a 10-minute excerpt from a standard opera by Puccini, Verdi, Strauss or other romantic composer. You will also be asked to sing the vocal lines, in order to demonstrate your understanding of the integration between the vocal lines and the orchestra.

ADULT CHORUS
Auditions
Auditions for the 2010-2011 Adult Chorus are complete. Please check back in March 2011 for audition information for the 2011-2012 season.

Rehearsals and Performances
All chorus rehearsals take place in Norfolk Virginia at the Harrison Opera House. The number of rehearsal hours required varies by production, but choristers can expect to spend approximately two months on a production from first rehearsal to final performance. Performances are presented in Norfolk, Richmond and Fairfax in Virginia.
Compensation
Virginia Opera is a professional chorus offering competitive compensation. Transportation and lodging are provided as appropriate for the Richmond and Fairfax venues.

SUPERNUMERARIES
Supernumeraries are people of all ages who share the stage with operatic artists. Supers act as 'extras' on the stage. Supers can play soldiers, townspeople, nuns, gypsies as well as many other important roles. A super's enthusiasm and cooperation is an important part of any operatic production.

Virginia Opera produces four main stage productions each season. Most Virginia Opera mainstage artists are hired through artist management agencies. However, non-managed artists are occasionally hired in principal roles. All main stage principal artists should have considerable professional experience with other opera companies. Virginia Opera's Bravissimo Society is delighted to announce its First Vocal Awards Competition, to be held in the spring of 2011! The objective of the Vocal Awards Competition is to identify talented aspiring singers who are not yet under formal professional management.
Prizes include:
First Place - $2,500, plus a principal or cover role in an upcoming Virginia Opera production;
Second Place - $1,500;
Third Place - $750;
Encouragement Award - $500.
Applications will be available at the Bravissimo Society website by September 1, 2010, and must be received by the Bravissimo Society by January 31, 2011.
