Virginia Opera Presents 2nd Annual Opera in the Park Concert
Posted September 1, 2010 NORFOLK, Va. – Virginia Opera presents the 2nd Annual Opera in the Park Concert at Town Point Park at Norfolk’s waterfront. The Saturday, September 11, 2010 event starts at 3:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public! The concert will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will feature the singers from Virginia Opera’s production of Verdi’s Rigoletto. The performance will include the most delightful music ever composed; from popular Broadway melodies to breathtaking opera arias, duets and ensembles.
The United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Band of Fort Monroe, Virginia will be performing at 5:00 p.m. at Opera in the Park. The majority of band members studied music at some of the finest colleges, conservatories and universities in the United States and abroad. The TRADOC Band performs numerous concerts in support of local, regional, and national events, including festivals, inaugurations, and both city and state commemorations. The band provides music for numerous military ceremonies and performs for visiting American and foreign dignitaries.
Virginia Opera's Artistic Director Peter Mark and WHRO-FM's Program Director Dwight Davis and Humorist, Author, and Professional Speaker Hope Mihalap are Masters of the Ceremony. Wear your Bermudas and flip flops to this family friendly day, and don’t forget the lawn chairs and blankets to picnic as the sun sets over the water. Attendees may purchase food from The Market and Omar’s Carriage House and soft drinks and adult/alcoholic beverages are available from Prince Michel Winery at the event beginning at 3:00p.m. or may bring their own picnic baskets filled with food and non-alcoholic beverages.
The 2nd Annual Opera in the Park Concert is a daylong event that has something exciting for all ages. Virginia Opera has teamed with WHRO, Children’s Museum of Virginia, Norfolk Public Library, Virginia Zoo in Norfolk, and Virginia Symphony Orchestra to make sure there is plenty of fun to go around. Starting at 3:00 p.m. the Kids Corner will be an interactive zone for children where they can work on educational and fun projects that they can make and take home with them.
WHRO is pleased to partner with Virginia Opera for the 2nd Annual Opera in the Park Concert. WHRO-FM broadcasts Virginia Opera's mainstage productions four times a year and airs opera each Saturday afternoon.
