Virginia Opera Board Elects New President
Posted June 16, 2009 Joan Barbara Miller will preside over statewide board of directors
NORFOLK, Va. – Virginia Opera’s statewide board of directors elected Mrs. Joan Barbara Miller to serve as president during its annual meeting on June 7th, 2009 in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Miller, who joined the Virginia Opera board of directors in 1995, is a retired fashion coordinator and buyer for I Magnin. She holds a BA from Mary Washington College of The University of Virginia. Mrs. Miller is a former member of the Virginia Symphony League Board and the Board of the Todi Music Fest. She is immediate past-president of the board of the Auxiliary to Sentara Hospitals Norfolk, which encompasses Norfolk General and Leigh, having served in this capacity from 1999-2001 and again from 2007-2009. She is a member of the Chrysler Museum Masterpiece Society, Chrysler Museum Glass Guild, Hermitage Society, Norfolk Society of the Arts, and the Cultural Alliance of Norfolk. She is a member of the newly formed Patient and Family Advisory Committee and Council of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She resides in Norfolk with her husband, Richard, where they share their interests in opera, symphonic music, travel, golf, and collecting glass.
Mrs. Joan B. Miller replaces Mr. Mark T. Cox, IV, who completed his historic term as board president at the end of the opera’s 2008-2009 season. Mr. Cox was the first Richmond-based president since the company’s 1974 inception. Mr. Cox continues to serve as the board’s vice president.
